£3854 SPENT ON CAR
N.Z. OFFICE IN LONDON (P.R.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. An item in the Estimates .of £3854 for the purchase of a new motor-car for the New .Zealand High Commissioner in London was queried by Mr. F. W. Doidge (Oppos., Tauranga), in the House of Representatives. He asked: “What manner of car is this? One would think it was a Rolls-Royce.” The Prime Minister: It is. That was extravagance at a time when the Minister of Finance was appealing for a restriction of purchases that would earn dollars for Britain elsewhere, continued Mr. Doidge. In any case the car was probably not for Mr. Jordan, who was a man of simple tastes, and would probably feel uncomfortable riding In a Rolls-Royce. “I think it is to take the Prime Minister to the Royal wedding,” he declared. In regard to that I must say it won’t be my pleasure,” replied the Prime Minister. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland: “You’ll take a taxi?
