MORE IMPORT CUTS
AUSTRALIAN PROPOSALS CARS, PETROL, TOBACCO (9 a.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 27. The Federal Cabinet is expected to cut American and Canadian imports by another 20,000,000 dollars a year to help bridge Australia’s dollar gap. It will consider a recommendation on October 7 to make this saving on the imports of motor cars, petrol, tobacco, textiles and metal manufactures. Correspondents predict that the proposed cut in textiles will force the Cabinet to increase coupon ratings on cotton goods and clothing by up to 25 per cent, and that the new ratings will operate from November 30. Correspondents also state that motor chassis and tobacco imports will be cut by a further 10 per cent, making a total reduction of 30 per cent. A 10 per cent reduction is expected in petrol imports.
