4 d CUT URGED

PRICE OF PETROL WARTIME TAXATION HIGHWAYS’ BOARD FUNDS (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 27. “I would recommend to the motor unions in. New Zealand that they concentrate their efforts on the relief of the petrol tax," said Mr. M. H. Wynyard, a fhember of the Main Highways Board, reporting to the annual meeting of the South Island Motor Union. The 4d tax had been put on petrol for war purposes, he added, apd the Motor Union, had fair claims to have it removed. Originally For Maintenance "Any Parliament whioh could collect a tax such as that on petrol could keep on increasing it" said Mr. P. W. Breen (Otago), who added that the original idea of the tax had been agreed to so that the money obtained could be spent on highways maintenance.' "If w e are going to'be at the whim of the Treasury in the expenditure of that money then I think it is unfair and unreasonable that the motorists' money should be put into the pockets of the Government for general purposes.” said Mr. Breen. “I deprecate the policy of the motorists in New Zealand ,in the way they have been tackling this question of removing the petrol tax,” said Mr. F. W. Freeman (Canterbury). ‘I know that a good case has been put up, but we have failed in impressing the Government of the quality of our case," Clear-cut Fund Urged

"Are we to get out a just proportion, out of the funds obtained from this tax?” asked Mr. G. Hamilton (Canterbury). "I would like to see a clearcut fund for the Highway Board and not just one big blanket." A motion by Mr. H. J, Main (North Otago) was carried and is to be presented to all the members of Parliament. It is: “That this conference request that the tax of 4d a gallon on petrol imposed in 1939 for defence purposes be removed without further delay, and that the Government be requested to give an assurance that the minimum contribution annually to the funds of the Main Highways Board be not less than the total taxation coir lected from motorists each year.”
