‘'SOAPBOX DERBIES” TROLLEY RIDING DANGERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. While the proposed "soapbox derbies" in various centres would probably be adequately controlled, there would be undoubted repercussions from the contest which were most undesirable, said Mr. F. Backett, acting for the Minister of Transport, Mr. J. O’Brien, xn a statement explaining the departmental view op the proposal. Fatalities had pcqxifrgd ip the past through boys riding in trolleys apd the contests, despite safety rules for their conduct, would cause q revival of trolley riding in the streets —only too often with serious consequences to life and limb. Whether held on public roads or on private property, the contests would encourage hazardous and often disastrous trolley-riding practices, which otherwise were steadily disappearing.
