DELAY IN KILLING
HIGHER LAMB WEIGHT REGULATION REQUESTED EXPORT TRADE INCREASE ip. A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. The Aid-for-Britain National Council is to recommend ;o the Government that the primary industries’ controller should bring into force immediately an order prohibiting the killing of spring lambs before November 30. unless the dressed weight exceeds 301 b. If this were done the result would be upwards of an extra 500,0001 b of meat for Britain this coming season, said the chairman of the council, Mr F. P Walsh today- " The proposal was discussed with reoresentatives of the Meat Board, the Marketing Department and the Agriculture Department and it seems clear that the implementing of such an order would mean that perhaps 50,000 lambs would put on 101 b extra weight each before killing,” he said. “This would involve no real sacrifice to local consumers, and although some farmers would not be able to catch the high prices for light-weight early spring lamb, their ultimate sales on heavy carcases would not involve a greatly reduced return.
“Certainly from the national viewpoint the producing of an increased weight of meat for Britain appeared to the council to justify thoroughly the recommendation,” Mr Walsh concluded.
