MAORI CHIEF’S DEATH

DESCENDANT OF HINEMOA The chief of the Maori village of Whakarewarewa, Mihaka Makiha, a descendant of a long line of Arawa chiefs, has died, aged 69. He was one of the few remaining elders of his generation in the Tuhourangi tribe. Makiha was directly descended from the celebrated Hinemoa, of Maori legend fame, who is said to have swum Rotorua Lake between Molcoia Island and the mainland about 250 years ago. An expert bushman Makiha spent most of his career on logging work, and was a former employee of the State Forest Service- He will be succeeded as elder of Whakarewarewa by his younger brother, Matina Makiha.
