ROYAL VICTOR MAY RETURN TO FORM IN HASTINGS LOWRY
(Herald Special Service.)
THERE is every indication that the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting, opening in Hastings tomorrow, will be an interesting one. All the races have attracted equal and well-filled fields.
The T. H. Lowry Handicap is the chief handicap event tomorrow, while the open Flying has drawn such a good class field that as a sprint race it appears to be likely to prove one of the best six-furlong events seen on the Hastings course for some years.
The Hastings Stakes will see the two-year-olds in action, with four of the 'acceptors possessing recent place form; there are no winners among those carded, but a few are reputed to be imart. •
The hurdles and the hack events have drawn even fields, particularly the hack races. The course is in good order, and maybe the best spring race times recorded this season will be registered:
GOOD CLASS IN MAIN EVENTS
AT. H. Lowry Memorial Handicap
CITATION (2), 9.0, has done well since graduating from hack ranks, and 9.0 over 10 furlongs will severely test her, but racing condition is in her favour.
ROYAL VICTOR (3), 8.7. raced over a sprint distance at Carterton and was noticed finishing on at the end of that race; he looks dangerous now in this CAPRONELLA (1), 8.0, won this race last season from a good field. Her showing last Saturday at Marton was not very helpful or impressive, but with her you never can tell. RAMICOURT (12), 8.4, at Carterton ran a splendid race to beat all but Rosswood, so that a repetition of that form should see him very dangerous. TREMELLO (14), 8.4, is also engaged at Otaki. This Ringmaster gelding failed at Taratahi after impressive track gallops, so that it depends on how he feels on the day.
PRINCE REVEL (13), 7.8, is now being tried over a middle distance. On his last visit to Hastings he won an open sprint. He is bred to go the distance, but is one that only sometimes reproduces his good track workDARK MORNING (7), 7.6, won at New Plymouth, but even allowing for that success he will not be in demand now.
WELCOME GUEST (10), 7.6, last season was a promising young handicap performer and still is held in high esteem, although at the moment he is expected to do better later in the season.
LOWRY BAY (8), 7.3, on recent form looks as though he is past his best.
SINGING HILLS (6), 7.2, reads as dangerous as any lightweight, and his recent trip and racing at Wanganui have brought him to the peak of fitness. CASILDA (9), 7.0, is finding it hard to make the open grade, but she is the type that upsets calculations. FRENCH COUNT (4), 7.0, has yet to win an open race. He has been handicapped for some time by a wound inside his mouth that would not heal, but
he has now made a full recovery. He might yet make the grade anticipated, but should do better after a race or two.
MOKEHU PARK (11), 7-0, is not fancied on form.
OMAIO (5). 7.0, was second over a sprint distance on his last visit to Hastings. He is a hard one to sum up, but to dale his form has only been moderate at best. ★Flying Handicap. STONY BROKE (9), 8.11, now the virtual topweight, galloped attractively the other morning at Hastings and is not left out of a final summing-up. GREAT TREK (7), 8.2, undefeated last season as a two-year-old, may be elected favourite. He has wintered well and gives every indication of adding to his very fine record and developing into a high-class three-year-old. MOROCCO (1), 8.1, has proved his ability and he is one that is being selected to give Great Trek a test worth while. BATTLE DANCE (G), 8-0, is overdue and although he has done better over a slightly longer course, there is no reason to suggest him not having a chance here. INDIAN GOLD (3), 8.0. since winning at Wellington last January, has not raced. However, the distance now is a little short for him.
COLOPIER (8), 7.10, is reported to have benefited by recent racing, so he might upset calculations. TRIG POINT (2), 7.5, trained off at the end of last season and now, freshened up, may regain that consistent form.*'
CEREMONIOUS (5), 7.2, is a brilliant galloper, and is improving with each gallop. It should not be long before he wins again. CZARINA (4), 7.0, on her running the other day will need to show a marked improvement to have a show. GOLD LAD (11), 7.0, may not be up to this form.
MASTER BARON (10), 7-0, is not greatly fancied.
EVEN FIELDS IN MINOR EVENTS
Holly combe Hack Hurdles Paganini (5), 10.9, on his first at Hastings last month looks the logical favourite as the opposition is anything but strong. Land Warden (6), 10.3, has not raced this season, his best form over hurdles being when winning at the Bay of Plenty fixture last April, after which he ran unplaced twice. Carnforth (2), 10.0, 12 months ago deadheated for second with Catterick Bridge in the Lowry Memorial on the same track. He is a newcomer into hurdling and looks as though he has yet to gain the necessary confidence. Griffin (3), 9.4, was fourth at Wanganui in his first hurdle effort; is a possibility. Beau Jewel (10), 9.3, was third last Saturday, coming home solidly the last half-mile from last. Now over an extra half-furlong and on a bigger track he may do better. Denny's Gift (9), 9.3, was fourth recently at Wanganui, where his rider was fined for easing his mount up over the last bit, otherwise he would have been third. Kincrop (1), 9.1, has only started once over hurdles and then when in front he fell at the second hurdle. He shows promise, but lack of experience docs not favour him more than a place possibility. Autofly (S), 9.0, lias been asquilting himself well for a novice, but is not fancied just yet.
Makutu (7), 9.0, has the right condition and is well seasoned and if kept up with his field early would not be left out of calculations. The Scotchman (4), 9.0, is one of the three in this event haying his first hurdle race. He shapes promisingly and might surprise, but the race in company should prove beneficial for later engagements. Flaxmere Hack Handicap.
Langspicl (14), 8.11, failed to run five furlongs out at Carterton recently, but the firmer going may suit her better now. She is a hard one to sum up and it will have to be taken on trust that she will run out the distance. However, with her brilliant speed, in a slowly run race she might prevail. Clive Bell (15), 84, is a fair hack, but might be in need of a race. General Victory (6), 5.4, has speed, but be, too, will have to be taken on trust over six furlongs and racing is what he needs. Exemplary (12), 8.1, is fast and will be out with Langspiel over the first half mile, which will suit the better conditioned horses, who should have the drop on these two named fillies over the last furlong or two. Comedy Star (4>, 8.0, never runs a bad race and is always at a good place price.
Sunburn (51, 7.13, v%as very eon°‘ c ’*'Yil last season, weighing-in nine times out oi ip stijrUj.,
This 7l ish-liird chestnut can gallop, lint, having her first race for some months, might peak over the last bit. ltcd Herring (8), 7.12. did not start at Marton last week. He goes fast and is fit and forward. Sustain (lti). 7.11, has drawn fairly far out. She won well at Carterton in maiden company and should be in the money attain. Thciolex (21, 7.10, won the last time produced at Hastings, but in the meantime ran
nowhere at Tnratahi. This Gisborue-owned four-year-old has speed and enters calculations. Gcncro (10), 7.8, gave promise last spring when winning at his first public effort, but has only raced once in the interim, when he failed. He might prove a surprise packet. Hazrcne (3), 7.8, has won, and although not recommended i 8 not altogether disregarded. Royal Baron (13), 7.8, since winning at Greymouth last February has not run at all prominently. Merciful (9), 7.8, is no more than a remote lightweight possibility. Hawke’s Bay (7), 7.7, has been knocking at the door for some time in maiden races, but has yet to win a race. Village Squire (11), 7.7, on recent form is not fancied. Yalta (1), 7.7, is showing something like a return to her form of last February, when she won a double at Wairoa, nevertheless recent form does not point her way. The Hastings Stakes, 1947. BLUE SPEC (2), 8.5, (Nizami-Patria), has not raced and shows a little promise. BOLIVAIt (7), 5.5, (Beaulivre-Consuma-tion), led for two furlongs in the Kindergarden Stakes at Avondale and then weakened into fifth. Must be given a further chance. BURNISHED RING (14), 5.5, (RingmasterBurnish), on the track shows promise, but the progeny of this sire are not favourites with speculators. CHATTON <9), 8.5. (Chatsworth-Star Mark), has only started once and that when filling second place behind Stellar at Wanganui —form that, now, will be taken into consideration.
JACQUINOT BAY (16), 8.5 (Probation-Miss Joyce), was second the second day at Avondale, which may result in sending him out favourite now.
OUTLOOK (10), 8.5 (Robin GoodfellowBlackcnt), is a fine type of youngster that might require a little more time. PECTIN (4). 8.5 (Bal!och-Applcs3, has not raced and little is known of his ability.
PHALAMINT (3), 5.6, (Phaleron BayPanamint), was started at Carterton, hut was badly left. In his private work at Hastings he showed ability.
ROYAL NUPTIAL (12), 8.5, (Ninth DukeRoman Princess), was second to Stellar at Carterton, his only start to date. His form is not overlooked in summing-up this field of juveniles. ROYAL SHAH (5), 5.5, (Bulandshar-Mer-cian Queen), has not raced, but iB bred to win early two-year-old races. At the moment he may be a litle backward. SNOW BOY (15), 8.5, (St. Boswelle-Snow-bnll), appears as if he requires a little more time.
VADOZ (llj, 3.5, (Vaals-Kittyorai), has been third in botli his starts to date after being in the lead early. GOLDEN SONNETT (17), 8.0, (BroiefortElegy). is a filly of promise, but not having been hurried should do better later. HINKPAI (1), 8.0 (Probation-Princess Ball), is an attractive mover and having drawn the “ace” should, if she gets a clear jump out, be in the firing line. MISS MAJESTY (6), 8.0, (Black MajestyAgineourt). in private has gone fairly well, but her Carterton showing was not very impressive.
MISS OZEL (13), 8.0, (Coronach-Ozel), is not as forward as some of her opinments so hardly appeals so early in the spring. TIMBER LASS (8). 8.0, (Cambria ParkStolen Coat), in her two races to date haß failed to show up.
Imperial Plate. Brantford (11), 8.10, is the only winner engaged, having won last week at Marton so that this one looks the most likely to be favourite in this the biggest field of tho day. Clive Bay (25), 8.7, has place form to his credit and on form in a possibility. Lord Latour (12), 8.7, (syrs, by Rhodes Scholar-Madame Latour) is having his first race.
Marshall Poch (18), 8.7, (Bonn RopaireCapewind, 4yrs), is in need of racing experience. Skywriter (8). 8.7, (4yrs, Rhodes ScholarRock Dove), lias not yet raced. Citare (10), 8.2, a full sister to Citation, shows promise, but is not greatly fancied. Gondollno, (3). 8.2, owned in the Gisborne district, in her ono race last season was not in the call.
Irish Maid (4), 8.2, so far has failed to impress. Jounio (12), 8.2, has only raced a little and may improve later. Erinmore (13), 8.0, showed place from last season and is promising . Bainbridgo (24), 8.0, is not fancied. Master Grey (14), 8.0, has shown no form so far.
Queen's Parade (15), 8.0, (Theio-Sweep Clean), shows the family speed, but is backward at present.
The Missioner (7), 8.0, has only raced the once, when he was not very impressive. Viceroy (1), 8.0. and Bouzana (16). 8.0, (Lang Bian Gold Trail), will be bracketed, but will not bo among the favourites. Fine Dew (22), 7.9, has no form. La Bian (5), 7.9, is improving and might prove a surpriso place-getter. Loclrwinnoch (9), 7.9, and Lcchrca (19), 7.9, are owned by the same owner and of tho two the latter is preferred on her third at Riccarton last Easter and a win at the recent Hastings matineo meeting. Pascalo (26), 7.9. (Master Colossus-Penny-comequick), in her few sprints has shown ability and with a little racing experience should win races. Loyal Taffies (2), 7.9, has not shown up in her few races to date. Temple Fox (21), 7.9, (3yrs, Sly FoxSliirley Temple), has not raced. Tudor Maiden (6), 7.9, has only raced once, when she was out of a place, but her privato showings reveal her a filly of promise. Winter Sweet (20), 7.9, has drawn wide out, but, being a slow beginner, may not b« at such a great disadvantage. Sho has showr form and may bo ono of the best backed. Glenaray Hack Handicap. Vassilokos, (8), 9.0, last timo he contested a back race ho was handicapped 51b above the minimum and rnn unplaced, so it is hard to see why he has now been assossed at 0.0 as his hurdle form should hardly be brought into consideration in framing a flat handicap. Ho is not liked at his impost. Blackwater (9), 8.7, is only mediocre at best. The Denbigh (13), 8.7, won twice last year, including a win at Hastings at the June meeting over the same distance when carrying 8.2 so that in comparison to the top-weight ho has been pitchforked into the handicap. Liebestraum (11), 8.6, won recently at Carterton liko a stayer and will now bn having his dress-rehearsal for the H.B. Guineas, to bo run the next week. Rovivre (1), 8.0, won well over a middiedistanco at Wanganui; one of the form horses. Tuki Ngapo (5), 8.5, won at Hastings over 10 furlongs earlier in tho season, but since then his form has been disappointing. Maybe ho has been keeping his best for the Hastings track ngnin, a risk his supporters will have to take.
Sir Warrior (16), 8.4, is always one to enter calculations, but in tho past has done best on soft going. Mr. Valiant (12), 8.2, is a very bard one to keep track of and is not a payable proposition to follow. Pimlico (14), 8.1, won well at Hastings an amateur rider’s raco last month, but in his next up did not fare so well- —just aij outside possibility. Astrope (2), 8.0, failed at Carterton in a weak field, but that showing was prefaced by a second at Hastings. Ciuerous (6), 7.12, is not coming up to expectations, but was third in the hack mile and a quarter- at Carterton. El to Hag (3), Gild-chase (10), Lucky Spin, (15), Moteorina (4), and Robin Dell (7), all on tho 7.11 mark, on form cannot be recommended. Epsom Hack Handicap. Sweet Nymph (11), 9.0, a three-year-old filly that has only won ono maiden division at a Hunt meeting and has since been beaten into third at Wanganui in a hack raco carrying 8.9, has been anything but lenientlytreated now. She galloped well (he other morning and. despite her weight and recent failures, may again be fancied. Royal Cambria (4), 8.12, has not raced since winning a juvenile event nt Hastings last autumn; may want a race or two to bring him back to form. Dancing Girl (3), 8.11, was unlucky in Uio running at Wanganui, should go close now in making amends. Ballingagh (6), 8.10, won a raco at Riccarton last Easter and also won his heal at tho recent Hawke's Bay matinee meeting, but taken as a whole his form has been mediocre.
Vakura (14), 8.10, was a fair two-year-old last season, but Bt present looks in need of racing condition. Distinction (2). 8.9, has been left in tho Hawke’s Bay Guineas. Last season he wns hardly up to average, but better things aro expected from this Foxbridgc-Arawa Rose colt, who ran fourth in tho Wanganui Guineas after being checked in the running. Flying Dink (5), B.C, has a little form and always runs a fair race. Dlatis (7), 8.6, is not fancied. Beau Bijou (10), 8.5, is a recent maiden winner and >s well commented upon. Prince Coronach (8), 8.4, should be all tho better for his run the other week. Gildchase (13), 8.1, might prefer the milo and a quarter earlier race. Tucker Box (9), 8.1, is a lightweight-place possibility. Earubridgo (12), 8.0, has let his party down of recent date; he might do better nowon his home track. Waterloo Bridge (1). 8.0, has no form.
