U.S. GOODS FOR N.Z. EXISTING CONTRACTS DISCRIMINATION WATCH WASHINGTON, Sept. 19. Information reaching the United States Commerce Department is that existing contracts will not seriously be affected by New Zealand's dec ; sion as i dollar-saving measure to review imports from North America with the obiect of eliminating all but those considered essential to the Dominion’s economy.
Opinion in Washington is that New Zealand will not bring hardship on exporters irrespective of the extent whereby New Zealand importers’ profits may be diminished. It is considered unlikely that contracts involving North American manufacturers in special arrangements to fulfil them will be disturbed.
On the other hand, it is expected that contracts for supplies of standard goods considered non essential will be cancelled
Neither the Commerce Department nor the New Zealand Legation has received complaints from exporters concerning New Zealand’s proposals. The department explained that its interest was limited to the question of discrimination against the United States which did not arise in the present instance. The cancellation of contracts was a matter for arrangements between the exporters and importers themselves.
