European Girls’ Waiata

Of outstanding interest among entertainment items offered at the servicemen’s reunion at Ruatoria last evening was the action song and hakas presented by the Uepohatu party trained by Sir Apirana Ngata. The instructor explained to the gathering that the girls in the party came “from the four corners of New Zealand,” and had taken months to prepare in their items. Seven of the girls were Europeans, he added, and he challenged anyone to produce seven girls more attractive or more accomplished in the characteristic Maori movements. When the European girls were given the front of the stage they were vociferously applauded, and their performance fully justified Sir Apirana's encomiums.
