NO “BLANK CHEQUES” FOR EUROPE
REPUBLICAN HEAD WARNS GOVERNMENT PRESIDENT MUST PRODUCE THE FACTS (N.Z.P.A.—Reuter— Copyright.) (11.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, September 5. Senator A. H. Vandenburg, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said today it was up to President Truman alone to summon Congress for aid to Europe and justify the summons by producing facts.
Senator Vandenburg issued a warning that Congress would not give aid in the dark and would not write any blank cheques.
He dashed any hope that the Republican Party would recognise the crisis described by the Under-Secretary of State, Mr. Robert Lovett, on Wednesday and that Republican leaders of the House and Senate would call Congress into session.
Senator Vandenburg pointed out that many members were now abroad and would not return before the middle of October. Senator Vandenburg’s statement came after an outbreak of accusations from other Congressmen that, the State Department was artificially generating the European crisis for political purposes.
