FINE DAFFODIL SHOW (Herald Correspondent.)
The Wairoa District Horticultural Society held its dailkkhl show on Thursday, when it was officially opened by the Mayor, Mr. C. \ . Chamberlain, who congratulated the president, Mr. O. 11. E. Yates, ami his committee on the success achieved by securing such a large and beautiful number of exhibits. The judge of the daffodils and cut flowers was Mr. G. T. Maunder, Gisborne, while Mrs. J. A. K. Stewart, Nuhaka, adjudicated in the decorative section.
The prize for the champion daffodil went to Mrs. O. H. E. Yates, and other special trophies were won as follows: —Open Section: Mrs. P. J. Helean. Novice Section: Mrs. Jtieican. Decorative.—Open Section: Mrs. Yates. Novice: Mrs. S. Maun. Gut Fowers.— Open Section: Mrs. Yates. Novice: Mrs. S. Rote. Shrub: Mrs. F. J. Hodgson. Special foi junior gaining most points: Miss Judy Osmond. Special for most in Combined Novice Classes: Mrs. A. F. Kirk.
No fewer than five queens have been nominated for the queen carnival competition to help raise the i‘lo,ooo appeal for the war memorial in AVairoa: The organisations concerned are the Wairoa Amateur Theatrical Society, Wairoa Retailers' Association, Women’s Division of the Federated Farmers, combined R.S.A. and H.S.A., and a Maori candidate. The names of the young ladies who will carry the colours of the different organisations have not yet been announced.
The annual report of the Wairoa Tennis Club shows that the club has experienced a very satisfactory year and an increased membership is expected for 1947-48. The officers for the coming season are:—Patron, Mr. C. V. Chamberlain; president, Dr. E. B. Jardine; vice-president, Mr. W. R. Petchell; hon, secretary, Mr. G. Archibald; club captain, Mr. E. M. Halstead; hon. auditor, Mr. I. C. Moore; committee, Mrs. C. C. Smith, Misses E. Kenny and N. Marshall. Messrs. L. A. Best, T. Good ley, and K. Burne. Mr. and Mrs. R. M. McDonald have returned to Wairoa from Auckland, where Mr. McDonald attended the annual conference of the Dental Association.—Mrs. T. S. Crarer, who has been on a visit to Wellington, has returned to Wairoa.—Miss A. Bridge, Havelock North, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. B. Bridge, Frasertown.
