AVONDALE CUP TOP-WEIGHT HAS IMPROVED FORM
(HERALD Special Service)
HPHE Avondale Jockey Club will open its spring- meeting at Avondale tomorrow with very bright prospects as the fields are the largest this club has enjoyed.
The Avondale Cup the first day and the Guineas the second are perhaps the chief items of interest. The Avondale Stakes, for two-year-olds, will not be run until the Novem-ber-December meeting, but this event has been substituted by a race with similar conditions, the Kindergarten Stakes, named after one of the greatest racehorses that ever raced in the Dominion, the Gisborne-bred, owned and trained Kindergarten, who opened his career at Avondale in the Stakes in September, 1939. He was ridden by Percy Atkins, who for the initial Kindergarten Stakes is the trainer of one of the favoured candidates, Bolivar.
Wmrrn® Guide W<@r Mmees
GAY YOUTH (16), 7.9, on Tarnnnl>i form cannot be recommended. TWEEDSMUIR (8), 7.6, is not recommended.
OUR GOLD, (12), 7.2, on a heavy track would be very hard to beat. BEDEVERE (11), 7.1. at the weight appeals a little, but over 11 furlongs has no form.
LOWRY BAY (4), 7.0, was unplaced in a poor field at Foxton last Saturday. SAFFRON WALDEN (1), 7.0, would surprise if it won. FIANNA FAIL (2), 7.0, reads a very dangerous light-weight. FOXLAW (11) and FRONTIER MAC (6), both 7.0, make up the field. Kindergarten Stakes.
Cornwallis Handicap. FIRST DIVISION Topical, 9.0, has not won since early last summer. Horonui, S.lO, on his third in the Pakuranga Hunt last month must appeal. Floral Dance, 8.7, may be in need of a race. Kia Ora Katoa, 8.5. is in rare racing and winning order, a deciding factor often in the early spring. Kind Regards, 8.4, won at the Pakuranga Hunt, form that must not be overlooked. Wonder Roy, 8.2, won three events last season in a row and with a race last month may now be brought into a final summing-up. Angclene, 8.2, was ia the money in the last four juvenile starts for a win. two seconds, and a third. This Fox-bridge-Bonnie Song filly is smart. Wooloonga. 7.13, won a juvenile race last season. Interceptor, 7.10, to date has been only average. Rozami, 7.10, ran second at Nesv Plymouth last Saturday. Of those on the minimum, pastern Charm may do best. SECOND DIVISION
This two-year-old race will not interest offcourse bettors from a speculative point of view, but nevertheless will be followed with interest. It will be run in two divisions and is a very difficult race to sum up as so many of the acceptors have not yet had their lollops reported. Swanson Handicap.
Golden Pay, 9.0, a reinstated hack, has not won since succeeding in the 1946 Jellicoe Handicap. Mollie lion, 8.12, is another that is now eligible for hack company and will appeal. Te Wcpu, 8.11, is engaged earlier, but may take on this race, having drawn the
“ace.” Flying Jim, 8.11, has not won for over 12 months. Tin Musk, B.S, will probably start in the Henderson Handicap. Silver Cane, B.S, was second to Skymaster at Ellorslie three weeks ago. Our Dave, 8.4, is not a strong fancy, ' but is an honest gelding. Master Dink, 8.4, seems just good enough to suffer defeat. Bob, 8.4, might surprise. Ostentatious, 8.3, will he at a fair price. Norman Knight, 8.2, since finishing second to Banshee at Trentharn lias failed. Bay Jim, 8.2, won impressively at Eller.slie three weeks back—form hard to pass over. Loyal Lu, 8.2, after getting away slowly at the Pakuranga meeting, finished strongly for third at the end of 7 fur. Susan Lee, 8.2, should the going he holding will be fancied a little. Nancy Vaals, 8.1, was fourth at the Pakuranga meeting. General March, 8.1, if reserved for this race will he fancied. Cormcus, 8.0, won two hurdle races at the last Wellington meeting, these being prefaced by a third. Of the others, Valley Trail, 7.7, has the best credentials as she was third to Bustany and General March in July at Avondale. Flying Handicap.
Swannce, 8.12, is a useful hack and will enter final calculations. Aylesbury, 8.10, will iiave a track to his liking and is fairly forward. The Fake, 8.5, is not above the average. Golden Beau, 8.5, won twice last season as a, juvenile and was also in the money on four other occasions. Master Coronach, 8.2, a relative of Sleepy Fox, ran a third, a second and a first in juvenile events, tie is held in high regard by Ellerslie bask watches. Autogiro, 8.2, might surprised and would enter calculations on a heavy track. Tc Ark, 7.13. was just beaten for first by Kind Regards at Ellerslie last month after being second all the way. Magic Wand, 7.11, was a two-year-old winner last term. Bridge Watcher 7.10. may do the best of the others. September Hurdles.
Flrnada, 19.13, on his form at and prefacing the Grand National he looks the logical favourite. Bay Robe, 10.11, will find the distance in his favour and also has the right condition. Hunting Mac, 10.8, now meets the top-weight on 201 b better terms than when running fourth to that gelding at Avondale in July, which should give the Great Northern winner a chance to even up that score. Shepherd’s Mate, 10.2, although not a strong recommendation, is one that might upset calculations. Duality, 10.2, on the form shown at the National meeting, should be included in a final summing-up. Sir Fox, 10.8, on his two seconds to Eraada in July makes the solving of this problem none the easier. Braham, 10.0, is not left out of the reckoning. F’oxstar, 10.0. is another that has the right credentials if he must appeal. Irish Fox, 9.8, in the right mood would be a consideration, but he is just as apt to stop as he is to be in a place. Sir Jovial, 9.8, won both over hurdles and in the flat last month at Ellerslie so that he will have his admirers. Khadim, 9.5, .will find the distance in his favour. Town Echo, 9.5, so far his failed to make the open grade. Waiting, 9.5, is no more than a light-weight possibility. Gold Spots, 9.5, assessment by the hnndieapper says he is on the toboggan. Royal View, 9.4, is not fancied. Of Kamillios, Lotto, and British Talent, all Q. 3, the last-mentioned on form, should be the best backed. British Mint, in the money in his last three starts, appeals more than any other ninc-stoner, excepting Saturday's winner Jay Wind Henderson Handicap.
ROYAL SCOT (18), 9.4. is recognised as tho best sprinter in Auckland and, being such, his impost now is not prohibitive. NEENAH (21), 9.0. is not fancied. FLOWERBURN (17), 8.13, has not raced
Te Wepu, 8.13, is fair, bat has drawn wide out (21). Gay Ranee, 8.11, will appreciate the lower scale of weights. She is in tho right order. Broiealice, 8.8, was third last month so is not without a chance. The Fake, B.G,has drawn favourably (1) and so may prefer this to the opening event. Raphael, 8.6, failed last Saturday at New Plymouth. Kind Regards, 8.4, on recent winning form will be fancied, no matter which race it is started in. Brown Duke, 8.3, cannot be loft out of calculations on bis winter success. Langhntor, 8.2, won at tho A.K.C. Juno meeting over the same distance as now, seven furlongs. General March, 8.2, has been second in his last two efforts. Auckland critics would like him bettor over a longer course. Severe Lass, 8.1, is a Ringmaster, who are definitely unreliable from a betting point of view. Silver Race, 7.13, won a race last April at the Bay of Plenty. Te Paerata, 7.10, and Nobel Knight, 7.7, may appeal a little more than the other light-weights. Avondale Cup.
VALLEY BOY (17) 0.0, since last may has been one of the best performed horses in the Dominion and if not fueling the effects of his heavy winter programme would bo a very difficult candidate to dispose of.
HOWE (13), 8.12, is handicapped at 2ll> under w.f.a. There is no" evidence that he is capable of running out 11' furlongs. CHUNG CHONG (7),8.3, won tiiis race last season impressively and always races best in winter and early spring; now carries solid racing condition.
ROYAL CHARTER (15), 8.1, has done best up to a mile and a quarter. LEIGH HARK (5), 7.10, is an average bill honest performer. PRECEDENCY (10) 7.10, promises to strip ia great fettle and on form cannot help but appeal strongly. COOGEE (3), 7.9, must be considered » dangerous contender.
siuco last April when it ran third at le Aroha.
CONTANGO (13), S. 10, won seven races last term, her last success being in May at Waikato carrying the same weight (including a 31b allowance) she has now. LORD REVEL (20), 8.5, is a fair sort, but is best over a mile. TIGER TAN (23), 8.4, was second three weeks ago over a mile. _He has two engagenumbs tomorrow and, will enter calculations ill either.
RATING (5). 8.2, won in ids last start last season on this course.
"GENERAL MONTEITH (7), 8.2, under adverse conditions won the sprint easily at the Pakuranga meeting last month. BLACK EERET (15), 8.0, recently failed at Taranaki.
WHITE BLAZE (12), 7.11, is best at a mile.
DEMONIC (11), 7.7. PELIAS (2), 7.7, NILOCH (8), 7.6. and SHIRLEY FOX (10) 7.1, were all smart two-year-olds last term, but the law of averages does not point to three-year-olds winning among good company in early spring, lienee the winner will have to be looked for elsewhere. TANITH (9). 7.0. failed last week at Foxton, nevertheless the writer is giving her a show so must think lie knows something.
APPOLLO (1), 7.0. was a very useful two-year-old and will disappoint if not found winning a good race later in the season. Borough Handicap.
Swift Quarry, 9.4. on form is pqst his best. Cambria, 8.115, boat only one home at Kllerslio last month. Balgowan, 8.7, has not raced for nine months. Tiger Tan, 8.0, when lie ran second last month drew 23. He appeals now. Lyn Vaals, 7.13, at its last effort won at Trentharn in July and on that form is not overlooked. Dougal, 7.13, has been racing well of late. Came from a long way hack to weigh in fourth at Kilerslio three months ago. Foxfable, 7.13, requires a littel more ground. Grand Tourist, 7.10, and Demonic, 7.10, are engaged in the previous event. Ascot Lad, 7,10, is a good galloper, hut may he in need of a race. Pola, 7.0. might surprise, hut is not recommended, while among the* others on the minimum Flying Robin and Bustany read the best, in fact, it would not surprise at all if the latter was elected favourite.
