BEVIN’S VIEW OF BRITISH CRISIS

The Foreign Secretary, Mr. Ernest Bevin, addressing the T.U.C. congress at Southport, said he expected the present difficulties to last two years during which time it would be very difficult to maintain the 1938 standards of living. Mr. Bevin, making it clear he was speaking for himself, said he hoped the Empire would agree to the possibility of a customs union. ‘'l don't think we can avoid any longer common defence and acceptance of certain common economic principles if we are to avoid these constant recurring crises,” he said.
