HUSBAND COSTS £IOOO
HYDERABAD RACKET BOMBAY. Aug. 17. From the State of Hyderabad came reports of a "blackmarkct in bridegrooms.” Hyderabad girls were finding it almost impossible to get husbands unless their parents were willing to give dowries ranging up to £IOOO. A university graduate fetched in the “market” anything over £SOO, but exservicemen rated very low Usually about £3O. Chief gainers in the racket were the marriage brokers, who arranged all matches and took heavy commissions. Astrologers and soothsayers also received their share. Hyderabad women were not taking it meekly. Three hundred college girls recently stormed a Government official’s house demanding an enquiry and a petition signed by 100,000 women was being prepared for submission to the Moslem prince of the State, the bearded Nizam Hyderabad.
