FATE OF AIRMEN

SEARCH IN ISLANDS

RESULTS DISAPPOINTING (P A ) WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. Flight Sergeant R. J. Begg, R-N.Z.A.F. medical orderly, who joined a party of American servicemen early this year to compile data about airmen missing in the Pacific, has returned to New Zealand. His task often took him through thick jungle and many difficulties were encountered. Every island in the British Solomons was visited, the Bismarck Archipelago was traversed, New Britain, New Ireland and New Guinea all were searched. Although the discovery of the remains of only two New Zealand airmen killed in the jungle was the immediate result, later work may discover the identity of others and lead to the recovery of their remains. Much of the region covered had already been searched by Royal Australian Air Force searchers, but all their finds were visited again and checked to ensure that there had been no mistakes, and to discover aeroplane numbers which the Australians had been unable to find. Thus the identification of airmen who had sometimes been buried as unknown was made certain.
