BILL AMENDED
CHURCH EXPENDITURE WAERENGA-A-HIKA TRUST (P.R.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. The Maori Affairs Committee lias made important amendments to the Yvaerenga-a-hika Trust Bill on which it reported to the House of Representatives yesterday. It has reduced from £4600 to the sum of £2IOO the amount proposed to be allocated from the trust funds to augment the endowment fund of the Turanga pastorate and has deleted the clause empowering the application of monies towards the erection, maintenance and furnishing of Anglican Church buildings in the Turanga pastorate. The amendments made to the original proposals of the Waerenga-a-hika Trust are stated to be satisfactory to the trustees, having been evolved in the course of discussions with the Parliamentary committee to which the bill was referred. Evidence was submitted to the committee bv the trustees through Messrs R. W. Halbert and E. Ruru, and the trust’s solicitor, Mr G. W. Willock, the first two mentioned being representatives of the Whanau-a-Taupara whose ancestor’s gifts of land formed the basis of the trust. The effect of the amendments will be that the Turaga parish funds will benefit by a smaller amount than was intended, and that money at the disposal of the trust will not be expended on church buildings. The proposals were submitted by the trustees at the instigation of the descendants of the original donors.
