SHORTAGE OF HOUSES IMMIGRANTS’ NEEDS (P.tl.) WELLINGTON, Sepf. 4. Asked by Mr. A. S. Sutherland (Opp., Hai'.raki) whether there had been _a lack of discrimination in the selection of. immigrants who arrived on the . Rangitata in Auckland from Britain, many of whom had been unable to get accommodation, the Minister of. Immigration. Mr. A. McLagan, replied that assisted immigrants were carefully selected, and that the Questioner had apnarently been misled by the heading of the newspaper report“l made my own inquiries,” stated Mr. Sutherland, commenting on this answer.
Returned servicemen looking for homes numbered between 15,000 and 20,000 and, in bis opinion, New Zealand had no room for immigrants until these men were provided for, said Mr. Sutherland.
A lack .of discrimination regarding the selection of immigrants could not be attributed to the Government, said Mr. McLagan. Passengers who experienced trouble in getting accommodation were obviously, he continued, selected by the shipping company and not by the Government.
If what Mr. Sutherland proposed was eanied out. instead of 50 per cent of the accommodation being allocated to assisted immigrants, the whole would be filled by the people whose only qualification was that of being able to pay the fe'-e
