A WOMAN’S VALUE
COSTS OF DIVORCE IN N.S.W. SYDNEY, July 16. Heavy damages awarded against divorce co-respondents recently are not necessarily a sign of rising costs. Legal men made these points when discussing a barrister’s remark about “the high cost of adultery” after a corespondent had been ordered to pay £1250 damages last week. They said that a woman’s value, like her mind, is most difficult to determine and, in many instances, could not be measured in terms of money. State records showed that one man who stole another’s wife many years ago had to pay out £SOOO. Other juries in divorce have awarded husbands a farthing and have even assessed a woman’s worth as nil. Within the past fortnight New South Wales juries have awarded damages of £4OO, £450, £I2OO and £1250 to wronged husbands. It was pointed out today that a home-wrecker, is liable to substantial damages irrespective of his means. What he pays need not go to the wronged husband. Often the money is set aside for the care and education of the children of the broken marriage. Co-respondents invariably pay the costs of suits brought by husbands.
A wife in New South Wales cannot claim damages against another woman for stealing her husband.
