24 DEAD; 49 INJURED

FIRE ENGULFS TRAIN (10.15 a.m.) BERLIN, Aug. 24. Twenty-four passengers were killed and 49 seriously injured when a carriage of a Berlin suburban train in the Soviet train zone burst into flames and was burnt out, says Reuter. It is believed that sparks from the engine set alight rolls of cinema film in the carriage while the train was moving. The wind through the glassless windows whipped the flames through the dry wooden carriages, causing more than 70 occupants to panic. Most of them tried to rush a rear door. Some jumped through the windows.
