APPLES FOR EXPORT GROWERS’ ADVOCACY BIGGER BONUS URGED (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 14. The Fruitgrowers’ Federation conference yesterday passed a resolution urging' that every effort be made to export as many apples as possible, especially to the United Kingdom, also that there be an increase in the bonus, it being maintained that the present bonus did not encourage the packing of fruit for export, which entailed extra labour and costs. Another remit stated that, in view of the continued increase in the private sales of apples and pears, the Fruit Council should be empowered to take such steps as might be necessary to prevent such sales from becoming a danger to the successful functioning of the pip fruit marketing scheme. More drastic steps to suppress black marketing were also urged. The conference asked for the ceiling prices to be raised to cover the cost of production and the marketing of pip fruits and for consideration of an increase in the stabilised price of apples.
It was urged that the growers should receive for early pip fruits a price more in comformity with market values and that the Fruit Marketing Council should make every endeavour to sell direct to the consumer.
