OLD GRIEVANCES
MORE MAORI CLAIMS
COMMISSION TO INQUIRE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. The appointment of a commission \ inquire into and report upon certain additional Maori claims was announced yesterday by the Prime Minister. Mr. P. Fraser, as Minister of Maori Affairs. The commissioners are the Right Hon. Sir Michael Myers. Mr Hanara Tangiawha Reedy, and Mr Albert Samuel, all three of whom some time ago were appointed as a commission to examine questions concerning surplus lands of the Crown. One case referred to the commission affects West Coast settlement reserves in the Taranaki district. Other cases involve three unrelated transactions with Maoris for the purchase of their land by the Crown, the
Rotorua township block, the Mokau block in the Bay of Islands district, now included in the Puketi State forest, and a block of land in the Mahia Peninsula. . . Mr Fraser said these inquiries were a further token of the Governments desire to see the long-standing grievances of the Maoris set at rest by an authoritative pronouncement *upon them. There were other claims being considered which might call for investigation.
