CAPTAIN ODOM’S FLIGHT
Sir,—A Captain W. Odom from the U.S.A. alleges that he has flown round the world in 73 hours. Actually he has done nothing of the sort. He has flown round the northern hemisphere, a very different thing. He makes the distance about 19,000 miles- When I went to school on the banks of the Lee about 00 years ago, I was taught that it was about 24,000 miles round the world, so the captain must have taken a short cut. Of course, the nearer he kept to the Pole the shorter the distance he had to fly. To lake an extreme case, he had only to fly to the Pole, drop a mark, and fly round it, and then claim that he had flown round the world in a few minutes. F. BEAMISH.
