FINGERPRINTS VALUE
RECORD OF ALL PERSONS MR. ORAM’S SUGGESTION (P.R.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. It wouid be a good thing if the fingerprints of everyone could be taken This opinion was expressed by Mi._M- H. Oram (Opp., Manawatu) dunng the second reading debate on the Police Force Bill in the House of Representatives last night. The bill contains a provision that if any person is in lawful custody, the police have a right to take all details for identification purposes, including photographs and fingerprints. However, if a person is acquitted, these particulars must be destroyed. Exception was taken by Mr. Oram to the destruction of fingerprints. The more prints the police could ratain, he said, the greater the protection that would be provided against crime. He contended he could not see why anyone could object to fingerprints once taken remaining on record, as this caused no harm or prejudice to the individual.
