1000-MILE AIR RACE

ROUND STH. ISLAND LIGHT PLANE TEST CANTERBURY PROJECT (P A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 13. A 1000-mile air race round the South Island, starting and finishing at Harewood and lasting two days, is to be run bv the Canterbury Aero Club in February next year. The race will be for light aircraft on a handicap basis and it is proposed that the winner should receive a cup and £SOO. The second and third prizes will be £250 and £IOO. The club president. Mr. H. D. Christie. said the proposal was that light aircraft should race from Harewood to Ha re wood, flying down the east coast to Dunedin and possiblv Invercargill, and then back to Alexandra. From there the route would be across to Big Bay on the West Coast and then on to Westport, Tophouse, Nelson, Blenheim and back to Harewood.

There was a possibility there would be an open class if sufficient entries were received.

A sub-committee had thought it wise from the safety angle to confine the race to the South Island as there would be no water to cross and the aircraft would be flying on definite routes.
