673 FURS MISSING
HOLE IN SIDE OF CASE AUCKLAND DISCOVERY (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Aug. 13. When a case of squirrel pelts, which was believed to have been stolen from the Blue Star Line motor-ship Napier Star but was later found in a hold under some other cargo, was delivered to consignee in Auckland yesterday, 1173 of the furs were found to be missing. The case originally contained 3000 pelts imported from Russia and valued in New Zealand at about £I2OO. The belief that the entire consignment had been stolen arose on Friday afternoon when a special compartment in the ship, where it should have, been stowed under lock and key at London, was found to be empty. Suspicions were allayed on Monday evening when the missing case was discovered among other cargo in one of the wings between decks. There was a hole about the size of a man’s list in the side of the case.
When the case was opened on the premises of the consignee, Mr. Arnold M- Heath, fur and skin merchant, it was found to be partially empty. The missing furs, valued at about £209. had apparently been extracted through the hole in the side.
