1947 HARVEST PROSPECTS OATS YIELD WELL DOWN LONDON, Aug. 10. At the start of the harvest in the southern half of England farmers are able to report a marked improvement since July in the promise of most arable crops, says the Times agiicultural correspondent. Crop estimates, even so, are consideiably below the 10-year average and both yields and acreages show poorly against the records of the war years. The oat crop is rather poorer generally than wheat and barley. This is especially unfortunate at a time when the Government is finding great difficulties in obtaining coarse grains from America. ...
