(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 12. “We people in New Zealand don’t want tea at 4/2 per lb. if it means that other people have to work for 1/- a day to produce it. This statement was made by the Minister of Finance, Mr. W. Nash, addressing the Wellington branch of the United Nations’ Association. Continuing, he said that in all probability tea would now cost 6/2 per lb.
Against, that, a friend had told him that it was costing 12/- per 11). in Switzerland. “Labourers on the tea plantations were getting Is a day,’ added Mr Nash. “Today they are getting 5s a day.” Discussing sugar, Mr. Nash said: “We in New Zealand eat too much sugar. There is too much being used for beer,
among other things. But the beer is not so strong as it was, nor has it the food value it had.” Other things listed by Mr Nash were lollies and sugar in children’s mouths. Quoting the 1934-38 figures, he said Denmark then used 1221 b of sugar per head. New Zealand 1131 b Boz and China 41b 2m. The figure for the Dominion was higher now, he said.
