LEADING VIOLA PLAYER
Mr. and Mrs. Max Gilbert, England, were in Gisborne at the week-end by reason of Mr. Giibert’s engagement with the British Music Society for a recital on Saturday night. Mr. Gilbert is England's leading viola player and has been with the Boyd Neel String Orchestra for 15 years; He also has his own string quartet and last year, out of 365 nights, he gave performances on 314 of them. Mr. Giloert is the last member of the Boyd Neel String Orchestra to leave New Zealand and departs for Britain on Wednesday. Mr. Gilbert's programme included a Brahms Sonata in E ’ flat, a Handel Sonata in G, a bracket of Irish folk tunes, “Minuet'’ from a Mendelssohn Sonata in E, "Allegretto” by Wostcnhome and Schumann’s "Romance.”
The programme was received with acclaim by the very large audience and Mr. Gilbert’s performance was the subject of considerable enthusiasm. He was accompanied by Mr. D. G. Dyer, and the programme also included vocal solos by Miss C. Ormiston and Mr. Martin Hooper, who were accompanied by Mr. W. Kohn. Mr. IL F. Wise, president of the Gisborne branch of the British Music Society, welcomed and introduced Mr. Gilbert.
"Romance,” “Minuet” and "Allegretto” were also played' in Gisborne on Sunday when Mr. Gilbert broadcast from 2ZM.
The visitors were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Wise during their stay and left Gisborne yesterday.
