SECRET BALLOT ISSUE
TRADES UNIONS RESTIVE LARGE-SCALE PROTESTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. Trades union officials believe a critical situation may develop unless the Government withdraws the bill providing for a secret ballot before strikes or lock-outs. It was reported today that the unions are expected to organise on the assumption that the Government will stand firm and in the absence of an undertaking satisfactory to the industrial labour movement, large-scale protests are to be expected. It was’ stated that within the next fortnight demonstrations against the measure may occur in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin. Those in Wellington will be slightly later because the organisation here has not advanced so quickly. Mass meetings of unionists and large parades arc having an upsetting effect upon industry. Surprise action is likely lo be a factor, one official stating that the Government l'self had set an example by the surprise introduction of the secret ballot proposal.
