EASEMENT URGED
DUTCH SHIPPING BAN EXPORTS TO EUROPE CANBERRA, Aug. 9. The Prime Minister. Mr. J. B. Chifley. asked the Australian Council of Trade Unions to ease considerably the union ban on Dutch shipping. The A.C.T.U. president. Mr. Clarey, and the secretary, Mr. Monk, on Monday will recommend Mr. Chifley's request to their full executive. If the executive accepts their recommendation, it will ask the 17 unions involved to modify the ban. Mr. Chifley did not 'ask the A.C.T.U. to lift the ban on Dutch ships trading to Indonesia. He told an emergency conference that .the ban would seriously affect Australian trade if it continued for long. The shortage of British-owned ships had made it necessary for Australian exporters to use any other ships available, and Dutch ships had been carrying fairly large quantities of Australian wool to European and British ports.
