PROJECT IN ALASKA
U.S. NEWSPRINT INDUSTRY (11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 10. The United States Forest Service has offered for sale 1,500,000,000 cubic feet of national forest timber in central and south-east Alaska for the manufacture of newsprint and paper.
The offer, which was authorised by legislation signed yesterday by President Truman, envisages the eventual establishment of a permanent paper industry in Alaska able to meet 25 per cent of America’s annual requirements.
