WIDE INTERESTS

MR. C. G. BAYLISS SERVICE TO PUBLIC LONG BUSINESS LIFE The death of Mr. Cnarles G. Bayliss, which occurred at his home in Fox street yesterday morning, broke a wide association built up over more than 40 years’ residence in Gisborne and active participation in business and social organisations. He was 67 years of age. Mr. Bayliss had been in delicate health for some time, but he had suffered no serious indisposition within the few days prior to his death, which followed a sudden heart attack. His birthplace was Birmingham, England and he had some experience of professional work before coming to New Zealand in 1903. Two years later he began his association with the legal firm of Messrs. deLautour, Barker, and Stock, which with only a short interruption continued .through the changes in the partnership, of which Messrs. Blair and Parker are the present-day principals. A man of great probity and executive capacity, he made his mark quickly as an accountant and found a margin of energy for many other activities. Varied Social Activities For many years he was district secretary of the Reform Party during the heydey of that organisation, secretary to the Gisborne social club and later hon. auditor, a keen member and office-bearer 'n the Gisborne Savage Club, and secretary and one-time player in the Gisborne Amateur Operatic Society. He was a member of long standing of the Masonic order. Mr. Bayliss took a prominent part in many public affairs, and for several years was a member of the Cook Hospital Board before a breakdown in his health 10 years ago obliged him to relinquish many of his activities. He made a good recovery from that illness, but he continued to enjoy moderate health only by the exercise of restraint for the remainder of his years About 1910 Mr. Bayliss married Miss Gertrude Gumbley, of Fernhill, Hawke’s Bay. He is survived by Mrs. Bayliss and five children, Miss Dorothy Bayliss, Gisborne, Mrs. K. G. Monk, Gisborne, Mr. C. G. Bayliss, jun. Australia, and Messrs. Noel and Peter Bayliss, Hamilton. The eldest son, Mr. C. G. Bayliss, jun.. is a member of the permanent R.A.A.F. Mr. Bayliss expressed a wish that his remains be cremated, and effect will be given to this wish at Hastings. A service was held at his late residence this afternoon.
