RUMOURS DENIED

BURMA OUTRAGES BRITAIN NOT INVOLVED SITUATION STILL QUIET LONDON, July 30. Reviewing the situation in Burma, the Prime Minister, Mr. C. R. Attlee, said in the House of Commons today that the Government of Burma had announced that rumours in certain quarters connecting the British Government and the Governor, Major General Sir Hubert Ranee, with the recent outrages were “utterly unfounded” and that the British Government. the Governor and the Burmese Government were all co-operating to bring the cuiorits to book. Mr. Attlee added that individuals impersonating the Burma police and carrying forged documents had at the end of June and on July 12 obtained important consignments of arms and ammunition from the base ordnance depot. A military court of inquiry was immediately instituted and the officer in charge of the depot had been relieved of his duties. The bulk of the stolen materials had been recovered. Mr. Attlee said the situation throughout Burma remained quiet and under control. There was no doubt that the majority of the Burmese were soiid behind Thalcin Nu and his Cabinet. He added that the Government of Burma had reason to believe that assassins were among those arrested and that the assassinations were part of a plot to overthrow the Government.
