CAN CARRY A CAR FIRST OF TYPE IN N.Z. BRISTOL FREIGHTER’S TOUR (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 24. With over 25,000 miles already behind her since she began a Commonwealth demonstration tour from Bristol earlier this year, the Bristo) freighter aircraft Merchant Venturer reached Whenuapai from Norfolk Island early yesterday afternoon. The first of her type to come to New Zealand, the aircraft has a commodious hold big enough to accommodate a large motor-car or general freight weighing 21 tons, and also a comfortably furnished cabin amidships with seats for 18 passengers. Commanded by Captain R. Ellison, the aircrait brought to Auckland Mr. M. Elliott, sales representative of the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Mr. E. E. Sender, navigator lent by Qantas Airways, Mr. J. Lamsdale. radio operator representing the Marcpni Company, m‘d Messrs. W. R. Burns and A. E. Davies, engineers. She carried no freight, part of the held being occupied by a large longrange tank installed for the Tasman crossing. Many passengers and some odd items of freight have been carried by the Merchant Venturer during her present tcur. Carried Attley ' Among the most distinguished travellers was the champion Victorian racehorse Attley, which was flown in the freighter from Melbourne to Brisbane to race there. Another reminder of this trip is retained in the form of a small plate bearing the horse’s name. The aircraft also carried a special motor-car used in Australia by Field Marshal Lord Montgomery from Sydney to Brisbane.

Local flying will be undertaken by the Merchan. Venturer. This afternoon the aircraft will fly to Kaikohe and back, on Friday morning and on Saturday she will visit Napier. She will continue to Rotorua on Sunday, and on Monday morning will fly to Paraparaumu.

The Merchant Venturer will carry freight between Paraparaumu and Woodburne for two or three days next week to demonstrate her load-carrying capacity to officers of the Government rail-air freight service.
