MRS. BRIDGET BARRETT
OLD WAIROA IDENTITY An elderly and very well-known resident of Wairoa, Mrs, Bridget Barrett, died this week, after being a resident of the district for the past G 7 years. At the age of IG, Mrs. Barrett left her home in Kilglass, County Limerick, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in •the ship Nelson. She arrived at Port Chalmers in 1883, from where, after a short stay, she went to Gore. Here she worked for two or three years. She then travelled into the comparatively wild area of Hawke’s Bay to take up residence in Wairoa. At the age of 19 she married Mr. Dillon, who died some years later. After the death of her husband. Mrs. Dillon married a widower. Mr. Patrick Barrett, and continued to live in Wairoa. Mrs. Barrett was an ardent worker for St, Peter's Catholic Church and was always ready to assist at church functions. She was also of an extremely charitable nature, and she maintained her helpful attitude towards others until her death.
Mrs. Barrett leaves a family of nine. They are Thomas, Andrew, Daniel. Peter, John and Michael Barrett, all of Wairoa, Eddie, of Obreon, N.S.W., Australia, and Anne and Bell, of Wairoa. She was also the foster mother of four children and the grandmother of seven. The funeral is to leave St. Peter’s Catholic Church, following a service at 2 p.m. on Monday, for the Wairoa cemetery.
