TAX ABOVE COST
PETROL IN AUSTRALIA CANBERRA, June 1. Australian motorists are paying a minimum of 2s 4»d a gallon for petrol which is costing 9.1 d a gallon to import to Australia, the Federal secretary of the Australian Automobile Association, Mr. T. G. Paterson, said. He is seeking support during the debate on the Amending Commonwealth Aid Road and Works Bill for a substantial cut in petrol tax to reduce the price of petrol, for the hyoothesation of all the petrol tax proceeds to the construction and maintenance of roads, and for the appointment of a representative of motorists to participate in the annual review of the incidence and allocation of the tax. Air Paterson said that at present the petrol tax at 10Jd a gallon was the biggest of all the components in the retail price. The price was made up as follows. — Landed cost. 9|d a gallon; distribution costs and wholesale profits. sd: resellers margin, 3 : !d; Commonwealth tax, lO s a; total 2s 4fd.
