AUSTRALIAN NAVY USE OF TWO CARRIERS AIRMEN TO BE TRAINED (1.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 4. Preliminary plans have been made to give Australia her own Fleet Air Arm. The Defence Council has approved of the scheme, which is subject to confirmation by the Federal Council. Two plans are understood to be under consideration. Either an aircraft carrier will be brought to .Australia with an expert staff to train Australian airmen or Australians will be sent for training to Colombo or England. Initially, 1000 volunteers will be sought in Australia, increasing to 2000 ns Australia’s defence programme expands. The keels of two aircraft carriers similar to the Glory have been laid in England for Australia and the ships are expected to be delivered in two to three years.
