The second cricket test between South Africa and England began at Lords on Saturday m sunshine before an attendance of about 30,000. England won the toss and elected to bat Mutton and Waslibrook being the opening batsmen. Both played very cautiously. Washbrook, when four, snicked a ball from Dawson straight to the wicket-keeper, Lindsay, who failed to hold the catch. Tuckett and Dawson compelled the batsmen to think about every ball, Washbrook reached 50 by driving Rowan lo long on. Washbrook contributed 50 of the total G 7 in 100 minutes. Hutton remained very subdued. He tried to punisli and off break and was clean bowled after scoring 18 in 110 minutes. Edrich livened up the game but England had scored so slowly that a new ball became available at 94. It caused Washbrook’s downfall when he tried to cut Dawson's first delivery and Tuckett, at second slip, held the catch. Washbrooks’ 65 occupied 140 minutes. Edrich and Compton icreased the pace of the match. Edrich played the innings of his life. England seemed to be completely on top while South Africa regretted a missed chance when Edrich, at 47, stepped out to drive Mann, missed and could have been stumped by yards but Lindsay failed to gather the ball. The game was interrupted for 17 minutes by a shower of rain and stopped 10 minutes early because of a second shower. The partnership at stumps had put on 21G.
