CHAMPION MARKSMAN
F. J. JEUNE HOLDS CUP GISBORNE RIFLE CLUB The Gisborne Defence Rifle Club completed the season’s programme on the Sponge Bay range on Saturday afternoon, when the championship aggregates were completed. In both the championship for the Barry Cup and the B Grade aggregate for the Ford Cup keen competition was maintained throughout the season, and the result was in doubt until the last match was completed on Saturday. F. J. Jeune, who once again retained the cup for the club championship, was responsible for a consistent number of high scores to aggregate 985 points out of a possible 1000 made up of five matches at each range, 200, 300, 500 and 000yds. R. Burson, who just failed to secure the trophy, also registered some very fine scores throughout the competition. He won two weekly matches with possibles, has eight maximum scores to his credit for the season, and an aggregate of 978 points. In the B Grade championship for the Ford Cup, several competitors showed ability to reach the maximum score at some of the ranges and should make competition in the club’s next season programme even more interesting. The successful competitor for this trophy was G. Jeune, a junior member of the club, who has shot exceedingly well during the season. He competed with marked success as a tyro at the recent Hawke’s Bay rifle championships. His aggregate was 932 which also placed him sixth in the club championship. His nearest rival, I. Foss, who finished three points behind, was responsible for some very consistent scores throughout the season also, having one possible score to his credit at 300yds. The final match fired on Saturday called for 10 shots at both 500 and 600 yds. and was marked by very high scoring. F. J. Jeune registered 99 out ol the possible of 100 to fill first place. B. Elliott, with 48 at both ranges plus 1 point handicap, a total of 97, secured second place and G. Jeune came third with a similar gross score. Other excellent rifle scores returned in the match were those of J. K. Aitken 49 and 48, I. Foss 48 and 48, and H. lies 49 and 47. Details follow: Final Weekly Match. —F. J.
