SPONGE BAY RANGE DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB Some excellent scores were made in the double 300yds match conducted by the Gisborne Defence Rifle Club on the Sponge Bay range on Saturday and also in the second match held over the 500 and 600 yds distances. In the first match J. K. Aitken secured first place, scoring 47 in his first effort and following that with a fine possible. I. Foss also gave a good performance for a comparatively young member, scoring a possible and following _t hat with 46 in his second attempt to fill second place in the match. Both marksmen had gross totals of 99 out of the possible of 100. Third place was taken by P. Foss with a gross score ol 98 The second match fired at 500 and 600 yds was won by the scratch marksman. F. J. Jeune. with scores of 48 at 500 yds and 49 at the 600 yds respectively. Second place in this match also went to a junior member. G. Jeune. with excellent efforts of 48 and 43 and a gross total of 97 points. P. Foss again shot consistent, scoring 43 at the first range and 45 at the 600 yds and took the third place in this match also. In this match two possibles were recorded at 500 yds. one bv J. K. Aitken and the other by W. J. Burton. Next week's competition over the 500 and 600 yds will be the final match of the club's 1946-47 programme and will decide the holders of the Barry Cup for the A Grade Championship and the Ford Cup for the B Grade Championship.
