SIX LABOUR NOMINEES
AVON BY-ELECTION SELECTION IN WEEK-END (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 3. The names of six nominees for selection as the official Labour candidate for the Avon seat made vacant by the death of Mr. D. G. Sullivan will be considered by the national executive of the Labour Party during the weekend. , An official announcement of the candidate is expected on Tuesday or Wednesday. . , The nominees are Nurse A. Mackwell. Mrs. A. J. Jones. Messrs. A. B. Grant. G. Manning, J. Mathison and A. G. Williams. The nominations were made at a special meeting in the Avon electorate on Thursday night and at a meeting of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee. Members of the national executive of the Labour Party present at both meetings were Mr. James Roberts, president, and Mr. R. Eddy. M.L.C. Messrs. Roberts and Eddy will return to Wellington this evening and they will report to the national executive, which will make the selection of the candidate.
