LIVELY DISPUTES

JEWISH VOICE IN ASSEMBMLY U.S. FACTION'S OPPOSITION (10 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 30. The Palestine debate has ‘ generated more heat among various Jewish groups concerned with or seeking representation in the special session of the United Nations’ General Assembly than it has so far among the 55 Assembly members, says the Herald Tribune correspondent. Three sizeable organisations—-the Jewish Agency for Palestine, the more militant Hebrew Committee of National Liberation, and the non-sectarian Political Action Committee for Palestine—and one community group, the Zionist Organisation of New York, have each asked for a voteless voice to speak for Zionism in the Palestine debate. On the other hand, the American Council for Judaism, an anti-Zionist group, sent a letter to the Secretary of State. Mr. George Marshall, opposing the claims of the four other groups that seek to establish Jews in a national rather than religious group. Zionists’ Ire Aroused The letter says the council does not look for an Assembly hearing since it regards the members of the United States delegation as its only authorised spokesmen at the United Nations. The attitude of the Council for Judaism has aroused the ire of the. Zionist organisation, members of which aie particularly infuriated by the council s opposition to the establishment of a Jewish State in Palestine and its insistence that the Jews should be regarded as nationals of the countries in which they live. Meanwhile, the Jewish Agency and Hebrew Committee. are busy attacking each other’s, qualifications as spokesmen for Palestine’s Jews. The Jewish Agency, however, has semi-official status because it was recognised as the Jewish people s authorised representative under the League of Nations mandate for Palestine, and consequently is ahead of the other groups as a candidate for Assembly repiesentation if any is granted to the Jews.
