NGATAPA RUGBY

PROMISING STANDARD REES ALLAN CUP PLAY. (Herald Correspondent.) Interest in district play has been stimulated by the inclusion of Wae-renga-o-kuri and Patutahi teams with Rere and Ngatapa in the inter-club competition conducted by the Ngatapa (Poverty Bay) Sub-union. A cup has been presented by Mr. Rees Allan and the management committee has decided that the trophy will be awarded annually to the winners of the competition. Sub-union officers for the season are: President, Mr. Angus Dods, Ngatapa; hon. secretary, Mr. It. H. Workman, Rere; delegate to P.8.R.U., Mr. Dods; coach, Mr. C. McGrannachan, Ngatapa; selectors, Messrs. 11. E. Harris, Hangaroa, and L. J. Cooper, Rere. At the annual meeting appreciative reference was made to the services given as secretary by Mr. N. Rivers and regret was expressed that he could not accept nomination for a further term. Thanks were also extended to the referees’ association for services during the season and the sum of two guineas was voted to the St. John Ambulance Association. Two Series Played With two series of games completed in the competition, Ngatapa and Wae-renga-o-kuri are joint leaders with four points each. Promising form has been displayed and is expected to develop with the progress of the season. The prospects are that a strong side will be available to defend the Black and White Shield won last season from the Waikohu sub-union.

Games played last week-end were keenly contested. At Ngatapa, the home team defeated Rere by 13 points to 11 in a fast game dominated mainly by the forwards. Tries for Ngatapa were scored by Wilson and Arnai, both being converted by Keri Keri, while C. McGrannachan kicked a penalty goal. Cook and Sheppard scored tries for Rere, one being converted by Pettit, who also kicked a penalty goal. Cook’s try culminating a movement' which started in mid-field was one of the features of the match. Waerenga-o-kuri were able to head the newly-formed Patutahi team by one point at Waerenga-o-kuri, the score being six points to five. Sherratt and Burrows scored tries for the home side and Patutahi’s points came from a try by McFarlane converted by S. Robb. The game was played at a fast clip and again most of the play was of a forward nature. Fixtures Pending Fixtures for the coming week-end are; Rere v. Patutahi at Rere; Wae-renga-o-kuri v. Ngatapa at Ngatapa. These matches will conclude the first round. The second round draw is as follows: — First Week. —Rere v. Patutahi, at Patutahi; Waerenga-o-kuri v. Ngatapa, at Waerenga-o-kuri. Second Week.—Rere v. Ngatapa, at Rere; Waerenga-o-kuri v. Patutahi, at Patutahi. Third Week.— Rere v. Waerenga-o-kuri, at Waerenga-o-kuri; Patutahi v. Ngatapa, at Ngatapa. fiQAw nsoa vlqcau J,f
