AMUSEMENTS

Majestic —To-day’s programme is headed by “Rhythm Serenade,” starring that favourite English song-bird, Vera Lynn. The added attraction for the evening sessions is an exciting and amusing drama, “Midnight Manhunt,” starring William Gargan and Ann .Savage. This programme will screen until Friday, and “The Green Years” will commence on Saturday evening at 7.t0. A special children's programme for the Young New Zealanders’ Club will be screened on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. King’s.—A challenging murder mystery is the new RKO Radio film “The Truth About Murder,” which opened at the King’s to-day. Bonita Granville and Morgan Conway arc the romantic leads with the former playing a resourceful woman lawyer and Conway, a district attorney in love with her. When the heroine’s law partner is charged with murdering his estranged wife, she defends him. Lionel Atwill and Bela Lugosi, two of the screen's distinguished "villians,” have prominent roles in the second feature, the comedy thriller, "Genius at Work.” Regent.—“ The Conspirators,” which began yesterday, is a spy thriller of the type that Warner Brothers do exceedingly well. All the familiar elements of a spy story are here. The action is set mainly in Lisbon, which during the war was a nest of intrigue, and those who saw "The Maltese Falcon” or "Across the Pacific” will not be surprised to find Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet never very far away from the centre of it all. Hedy Lamarr and Paul Honreid are the stars of this intriguing film. Repertory Society.—Gisborne in not included in the itinerary of the professional company at present on tour with Terence Rattigan’s successful comedy “While the Sun Shines,” hut Gisborne audiences will have an opportunity of seeing the piece, for the Gisborne Repertory Society has chosen it for the first of its 1947 productions. A ntrong cast is in rehearsal, and this fant-moving play will be well up to the high standard to which local repertory aspires.
