COPYRIGHT AGREEMENT

N.Z. AND UNITED STATES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 26. The Gazette to-night notifies the coming into force of the copyright (United States of America) order, 1946, and marks the conclusion of the agreement with the United States Government at Washington where Notes have been exchanged between the New Zealand Minister. Sir Carl Berendsen, and (he United States Secretary of State, Mr. G. Marshall. The purpose of the Order-in-Council is to extend the protection of the Copyright Act, 1913, to works first published in the United States .during the war which, owing to war conditions could not be published in New Zealand within the time prescribed by the existing law. The condition precedent to copyright protection in both countries is publication simultaneously in each country. A proclamation by President Truman extending reciprocal privileges in the United States to New Zealand citizens was to be published yesterday in Washington.
