ONLY URGENT CASES

DUNEDIN HOSPITAL NURSING STAFF SHORTAGE (P.A.) : DUNEDIN. April 24. Except in special circumstances, only urgent cases will in future be admitted to tile Dunedin Public Hospital and whenever possible patients will be discharged sooner than in the past. This decision has been made by the Otago Hospital Board and a lengthly circular on the subject has been forwarded to medical practitioners in the Otago district. The policy lias already been enforced at the hospital, and many beds occupied by patients who could possibly be looked after at home have been cleared to make way for urgent cases. _ I The main reason for the decision is the serious shortage of nurses which has necessitated a reduction in the number of occupied beds in the Dunedin Hospital, since only in this way can nurses be given the days oil duty required for health and efficiency. _ A restriction on the number of occupied beds has become inevitable, and is such that it is now necessary either to decline cases which normally would have proper and even urgent claims for admission, or to discharge cases sooner than is desirable. /
