MIGRANT SHIP CONDITIONS

After inspecting the immigrant ship Misr, the Australian Minister of Immigration, Mr. A. A. Calvvell. said the conditions were definitely unsatisfactory. He promised that in future he would see such ships were provided with a better standard of cleanliness and comfort. He said that many immigrants would have to be educated to Australian standards of hvgiene, hut he had no doubt they would become acceptable Australian citizens. Millions of Wasps An almost continuous line of dead and drowning wasps, stretching ioi almost 31) miles along the Ninety-Mile Beach, was seen bv the Mayor of Kaitaia, Mr. J T. B. Taafle, recently. Mr. Taafle was walking along lire beach north of Hukatere looking for ambergris, of which he had found two lumps recently, when he noticed the wasps The insects were in tire scum at the edge cf the water. On closer inspection he saw thousands. At intervals *vaves swept up the beach for 30yds. or 40yds. carrying tire wasps into a depression. There were also many wasps in the air. but they did not appear to be able to flv far. because of either wet wings l or weakness. On alighting many of these were caught by the waves.
