BAKSI'S VICTORY
END IN SEVENTH REFEREE STOPS FIGHT WOODCOCK’S COURAGE (11.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 15, The American, Joe Baksi, scored a technical knock-out victory over Bruce Woodcock, of Britain, at Harringay tonight, the referee stopping the fight in the seventh round. The crowd was stirred by Woodcock’s magnificent display of courage in fighting back after taking a terrific bat-
tering in the first two rounds during which he was floored four times for the count of eight. The American, boring in relentlessly, literally smothered his opponent with savage, ripping punches to the body and head. The fusillade sapped Woodcock’s strength, but he astonished the crowd by withstanding the barrage by sheer grit. It was not until the fifth round that Woodcock hit Baksi hard with his right, but he finished the round with his left eye closed. He repeatedly stopped uppercuts on the jaw in the sixth, but Baksi’s full weight did not seem to be behind the blows. The end came in the seventh round when the referee stepped in and crowned Baksi the winner.
