SWEPT OUT TO SEA SOUTH MURIWAI AREA MURPHY’S BEACH DAMAGE At Murphy’s beach, on the southern side of Young Nick’s Head, the water surged up the beach and flooded the low-lying land near the sea to a depth of approximately 12ft. A 15-aerc paddock of pumpkins on Mr. R. K. Murphy’s property was Hooded and nil of the pumpkins swept out to sea with the receding waters. In addition, half a mile of fence line bordering the beach was also demolished by the water. On the northern side of Hie headland the surge was not as severe, and the water did not reach any further inland than the lower levels close to the beach and the flat land on the sides of the Waipaoa River. Only minor damage was done in the area.
