EARTHQUAKE CENTRE

PROXIMITY TO GISBORNE UNDER 50 MILES EAST (P.A.) WELLINGTON. March 26. The Dominion Observatory reports that the earthquake was recorded on the seismograph at 8.33 this morning. The instrument showed a very large disturbance, and tremors from the same shock were still being recorded at 10 a.in., when the seismograph papers were changed. The centre was about 270 miles from Wellington. From information received by the observatory, the centre was evidently less than 50 miles east of Gisborne. Commenting on the earthquake, an Observatory official said it was a heavy shock and it wAs fortunate that it occurred away from a centre of population.
